NEWS: Budget Cuts Hit Hampton Roads, Virginia Paratransit Services
NORFOLK, VIRGINIA - On October 7, 2011 Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) announced changes that will effect Handi-Ride service to the disabled in Norfolk, Virginia. In December, MV Transportation (HRT's current Paratransit service provider) will begin using local taxi companies for some trips. Riders that are unable to use the taxis will still continue to use the paratransit buses. As well, the maximum scheduled on-board time of 60 min. will extended to 90 min. For employees it will result in 56 driver and 6 non-driver job positions at MV being eliminated. These changes are expected to save HRT an estimated $2 million dollars over the remaining 2 1/2 years of the contract with MV Transportation. For more information see: Handi-Ride Changes.
