El Bondera (The Fare Meter)

EL BONDERA - El Bondera (The Fare Meter) is a 2008 documentary directed by Cairo born, New York based Sherif Sadek for Akhnaton Films. The film shows Cairo cab drivers talking about their lives driving taxi in a city of 18 million inhabitants, largest city in Egypt and the Arab world. Shooting a documentary like El Bondera is difficult in Egypt because the film-maker has to get permission from the Censorship Board. You have to submit a script, locations have to be approved, and a government official would have to go along with you. Instead, director Sherif Sadek "decided I wasn't going to get a permit. I'm just going to get in a cab and see if they'll talk to me. Some of them didn't want to talk, others did." See Sherif Sadek's El Bondera and El Bondera Facebook Page for more information.
