LOUISVILLE, KY - The Injury Risk Assessment and Prevention Laboratory (iRAP) at the University of Louisville is a "multi-disciplinary lab that conducts state-of-the-art research through the application of engineering and medical principles to real world and clinical problems" including wheelchair transportation safety. iRAP researchers use computer modeling and impact testing to assess risk of injury to wheelchair users in motor vehicle accidents, as well as developing new wheelchair designs and standards to improve safety under crash conditions. iRAP is headed by Mechanical Engineering Associate Professor, Gina Bertocci. One of the research projects underway is the Assessment and Monitoring of Wheelchair Transportation Activities and Incidents on Public Buses which involves an on going partnership with TARC, the Transit Authority of River City for Louisville, Kentucky.
