News: Nissan NV200 Wins New York City's "Taxi of Tomorrow" Competition

NEW YORK - May 03, 2011 - Nissan has won New York City's Taxi of Tomorrow competition to replace it's aging taxi fleet with a single new all-purpose design. The Nissan NV200 beat out the Karsan V1 and the Ford Transit Connect. New Yorkers should be able to hail their first NV200 as early as 2014. Eventually 13,000 of the specially built taxis will be produced, over 10 years. The price per vehicle will be approximately $29,000. Electric powered engines and wheelchair accessibility are some of the proposed options available, although taxi owners will have to pay out of pocket to upgrade their vehicle to become wheelchair accessible.
