Together: Demand Responsive Bus Service

DEMAND RESPONSIVE BUS SERVICE - The following video by Tim Tompson (produced through the University of Technology Sydney) offers an entertaining and informative look at how Demand Responsive Transport could be used as a viable form of community bus transport (in this case, in Australia). The model of delivery used is not unlike Smart Para-Transit as described in an earlier post, except with added emphasis on renewable energy, and personal transport alternatives like riding a bike. NEWS: PVTA Purchases 20 New Paratransit Buses with Federal Stimulus Money

The PVTA (Pioneer Valley Transit Authority) has used $1,025,800 of Federal stimulus funds to purchase 20 new paratransit vehicles for it's ADA Paratransit Service: Congressman Neal and PVTA Announce Arrival of Stimulus Vehicles. In a follow-up to this story: PVTA would later donate 3 of the "retired" buses to a local Springfield Senior's program - PVTA Donates 3 Vans to Springfield's Seniors.

Established in 1994, it provides transport for ambulatory, wheelchair, and stretcher or gurney bound patients in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. Their fleet always complies with yearly inspections by California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT); as well as being equipped with the latest adaptive equipment according to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulation.

NEMT Profile: We Care Transportation

NEMT / AMBULETTE SERVICE PROVIDER PROFILE - We Care Transportation is a non-emergency medical transportation service provider in Buffalo, New York. It transports over a thousand wheelchair assisted and special needs clients each weekday to appointments, rehabilitation, day programs, and social outings. We Care was acquired by Snyder Corporation in 2005. Since that time, Snyder Corp. has "implemented state-of-the-art driver training, stringent aide education, and a through vehicle maintenance schedule that has produced D.O.T. inspection rates that greatly exceed state requirements." Snyder Corp. also owns the Center For Transportation Excellence. The CTE manages NEMT for county governments, managed care organizations, and health and human services agencies.

NEWS: MetroAccess Launches Connecticut's First Accessible Taxis

NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT - WTNH ABC 8 - October 14, 2009 - Metro Taxi launches MetroAccess: Connecticut's first wheelchair-accessible taxi service. Michelle Duprey, Director of the City of New Haven's Department of Services for Persons with Disabilities says the taxis will help New Haven become more integrated. A recent study conducted by the department: Disability Census & Needs Assessment Study, showed that 31% of disabled individuals in New Haven said they were not working because of the lack of "affordable, convenient, and accessible transportation." 2010 MV-1 Wheels Across America Tour

2010 MV-1 WHEELS ACROSS AMERICA TOUR - The MV-1 is the first purpose-built wheelchair accessible vehicle designed from the ground up to meet ADA standards. In 2009, the MV-1 toured the United States and generated a lot of interest (see: MV-1 In Dallas). The 27 city 2010 National Tour started in June (see: MV-1 In New York), and after some summer trade show stops will resume in September. You can follow along with Twitter and Facebook.

Small Bus Fire Safety

FIRE SAFETY - The July 2, 2010 article and video: Driver Acts Quickly To Save Passenger During Bus Fire shows what was left of a shuttle bus and electric wheelchair after an on-board fire. The driver was able to quickly get all 5 passengers off (2 in wheelchairs) moments before the bus was engulfed in flames. Such driver heroics and close calls, like the one in the following video are sobering reminders of just how real and devastating fire can be.
